I received an email from my friend Shirley today. I cannot begin to describe the size of Shirley’s heart. She is incredibly selfless and genuine, not to mention the best hugger I know! I have never heard her ask anyone for help, but now she has so I know it is dire. Her father has Parkinson’s and needs surgery, but insurance will not cover it. I am asking you to help her by either making a donation or sending this to your network. Please know I don’t make this frivolously and would not ask you if it did not mean a lot to me! Here is her message:
Fifteen years ago, my father (papi), San Limbara, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). He was 45 years old. He lives in Jakarta, Indonesia, where medical insurance is uncommon and no insurance company will insure him due to his illness. It has been painful to witness a great parent whom I love so much decline from being a vibrant, smart, witty, active and independent person to someone who can barely walk and requires 24-hour care. The disease has interfered with his speech so much that simple conversations are difficult and sometimes not possible. It crushed me to see him cry because he was not able to dance with my sister during her wedding.
Medicines can only slow the progression of this disease. Once all appropriate medications have been tried unsuccessfully, brain surgery is the last resort of treatment. This is the case with my father. He is a candidate for the Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) treatment surgery and has a tentative surgery date of May 28, 2009. The surgery will cost $67,300 of which $47,000 is being provided by family members. Due to lack of medical insurance, all of my dad’s surgery cost is an out of pocket expense. In order for the surgery to happen, payment must be submitted in full to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore by May 21, 2009.
Donations may be made online through http://site.fundsforpapi.org or writing a check payable to Funds for Papi and mailing it to: Shirley Landry; 1308 Davenport Ct.; Kernersville, NC 27284
