Susan, meet Arthur. Arthur, meet Susan

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Some of you know my friend, Arthur. Arthur Itis. He is a bastard.

I ran the spreader for 2 rounds (fertilizer and lime) on Saturday. I could barely clench my hand into a fist when I woke up on Sunday. A little cheesy grits helped loosen it up, and we were able to go for a quick kayak trip before we got the kids.

Tuesday, yes 4 DAYS LATER, my elbow still hurts when I grip something to pick it up. My R pointer finger (injured playing basketball in college) was aching Sunday and Monday night when I went to bed.

Growing old blows monkey chunks.

The Best Mother’s Day EVER

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Awhile ago I typed out what my ideal day was for a thing on Facebook. Today pretty much fulfilled that. I got to sleep in, Paul made my favorite breakfast (from a recipe of my mom’s) while I cleaned out and organized our garage post-project (more on that in a minute). We rode bikes and did some yard work. We ate Mexican food on the patio on a gorgeous Carolina day w no clouds. I talked to my mom and hung out w Paul’s family, then friends of Paul’s stopped by. Shortly after we got home from dinner in Asheboro, Anna and Tyler were dropped off. They both made me cards that were so cute. Anna made me a bracelet of various color beads and had a poem about what the colors mean. Tyler had a picture he drew framed for me. Wow. It is my first Mother’s Day and I just don’t think it can be topped.

About our home improvement project…Usually I hear about couples arguing constantly over home improvement projects. Ours made me love Paul even more! I have seen Lance Armstrong side (cocky athlete), Martha Stewart side (cook EXTRAORDINAIRE!), work side (too smart for most ppl’s good), but to see the Bob Vila side, WOW! You can see the photos of him working (I really did just stand around most of the time like I predicted in my previous post) by clicking here. I was drawing 3D pictures and trying to get exact measurements and things. He had the whole thing in his brain for months and executed the plan perfectly! We only made 1 trip to Home Depot–the initial trip! THAT has to be a record!

Also at that link are some photos of chillin and grillin at Paul’s mom’s house for Mother’s Day. Healthwise…I am feeling much healthier and more ready to start the work week than I have been in a long time.

Quitters, dropouts and failures, oh my!

Yup, we dropped out. I have been feeling worse each day and can hear the raspy breathing in my chest just climbing a flight of stairs. Paul had a good ride w Tamara this weekend, but has not run successfully in over 6 weeks and even then his blister issue came back. I just emailed the race production company to give our spots to someone else.

What about the motto you ask? I guess if I am ditching goals, I should ditch mottos too, huh?

OK, off to wander aimlessly through life now…

New foods–CRAWDAD edition

Crawdad!?!?!?!?!

That’s right, CRAWDADS!! PLURAL!!! I am in Cincinnati with my mom and dad at Elli and Michael’s for my neice to be’s shower.  Today is Elli’s birthday so we went to Pappadeaux for dinner. It is a “seafood kitchen.” My mom got crawdads and a salad for dinner. Elli asked if there was anything on the table that could pass as my new food for the week. I tried to pawn off the Sam Adams White Ale, but no one accepted that as an answer. Crawdads were the only option.

My first reaction–hellzzzz no!! [[Paul tried to trick me into eating them after the MB marathon, but I turned my head quickly to see those beady eyes (the crawdad's, not Paul's) staring at me and I knew it was something NASTY not the Alaskan King Crab meat I thought it would be. My general culinary motto is that I do not eat anything with eyes still intact.]] But then, I do hear, once the baby of the family, always the baby of the family. That proved to be the case b/c my mom said she would pull the meat out of the carcass of the bug eyed creature. It did NOT taste like chicken. The spices burned the taste buds off my tongue–good thing b/c I had to eat THREE PIECES in order to get a clear picture.

NEVER forfeit an entry fee!!!

As you know from a previous post, Paul was sick at Belews tri. He then proceeded to have 103 degree temp for 4 days. I thought I had dodged the bullet. Until yesterday morning. I think I was fighting it OK, but then training was intensifying and I think my body is worn down. My throat is sore, head ache, stuffy nose. The pollen continues to coat EVERYTHING here. I know it is not the swine flu b/c I do not have a fever. I fly tomorrow to Cincinnati for Elli’s baby shower. I contemplated bringing a face mask from work, but alas, that would be stealing supplies. And I think the hospitals will seriously be needing all the supplies we can use in the upcoming weeks.

So, here we are and according to the main page on our website, Paul and I race the White Lake Half Iron Triathlon in 8 days. 8 days?!?!? When did THAT happen?!?! I am only worried about my asthma now. I anticipate the race taking about 7 hours, which is hard enough w/out suffering from or recovering from respiratory illness. But alas, I have this motto…

NEVER FORFEIT AN ENTRY FEE!!!

Now THAT’s what I’m talking about!!

My friend Susan J has a blog titled, “Nothing Could Be Finer Than to Be in Carolina” while she is attending IU’s MBA program. Let me tell you–NOTHING could be more true this weekend. It was 70 and sunny both days. Saturday afternoon Anna and I hung out at the park and went for a walk w my friends Lauren, Cathy and Ruthan. Tyler paced Paul on his bike for Paul’s 5 mile run {{I also ran yesterday, but I did it at 8am when it was 31 degrees out–we had to take shifts since we had the kids this weekend}}. Today Paul and I rode 42 miles w his friend Tamara. It was GORGEOUS!

We are both taking it easy as we both feel pretty beat leading into marathon week. We both have foot pain, although mine is longer standing and on the upswing IMHO. Paul has been feeling sick for about 5 days. I actually got him to take some medicine tonight. Probably only b/c I told him it was what I took during the Ironman when I had his same symptoms. :) We plan to take our multi-vitamins each day and each active culture yogurt. Lauren tells me 90% of your immune system is in your GI tract. Keep it healthy people!!

Why Is It So Cold In The South?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Lately our marathon training hasn’t been too fun. Last weekend it was cold all weekend and I didn’t run. Susan went early Saturday morning before Tyler’s basketball game and when she got home her hair was frozen. I ran during lunch on Monday and it was actually pretty nice out. Good thing I went at lunch because by the time I got home it was turning cold and getting cloudy, it ended up snowing Monday night. Then on Tuesday we went for a run with it snowing like crazy. It had just started snowing when we left and it wasn’t really sticking so slipping wasn’t a problem, it was just hard to see and cold from the wind. Yesterday we were suppose to run when we got home but it was 30 degrees with the wind chill in the 20′s so we decided not to go. This morning it was 18 with a wind chill of 9 and suppose to stay cold all day so I don’t know if I will run again.

Thankfully the marathon is only 9 days away because we are both ready to stop running in this weather. The weather is suppose to get better starting this weekend and we are looking forward to that. It is suppose to be 65 on Sunday so we are planning on riding between 30 and 40 miles. We have hardly been on our bikes at all because of the weather so the 63 mile ride the day after the marathon should be fun. As of right now they are saying it will be a low of 44 and a high of 61 and no rain in Myrtle Beach on the day of the marathon (which is slightly warmer than they were saying when I looked earlier this morning) so we are crossing our fingers that that forecast holds up.

On another note, I went and saw a doctor about my foot problem and he said I have sesamoiditis (which hurts like crazy!!!). He said that it was common for people with arches as high as mine to have this problem. He also said that I am “not exactly a small marathon runner”, which I thought was funny, and that contributes to the problem. He made me some temporary orthodics to see if they help and if they do he is going to make me some perminant ones. I haven’t done a long run in them yet but so far they seem to be working which my feet are VERY happy about. He also thinks that my knee problems are coming from instability because of my feet so he thinks the orthodics will help with that also.

Looks Like I Am Going To Have To Start Stretching

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I have been having some bad knee problems lately on our long runs so I went and saw one of the Physical Therapists that works with Susan today. Susan and I had already talked about me getting some orthotics since I have huge arches and he thought that would be a good idea. I tore cartilage in my knee about 20 years ago and he thinks it is possible that that is what is causing my problem now. He found that I am VERY tight in my hips and hamstrings which was no surprise since I don’t stretch. Susan has always gotten onto me about that and it looks like she is finally going to get her way. He gave me several stretches to do to see if that helps and if not we are going to look at other options. Lets hope the stretching works because I am guessing “other options” will be to clean my knee out surgically (they talked about doing that when I initially hurt it but I didn’t want to).

I HAVE to Start Stretching

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

I have had this ongoing problem with IT band pain for several years now. It started several years ago with cycling as pain in my knee and now I am having the problem in my hip while running. When ever it starts bothering me I start stretching it and everything is fine again after a few days. Of course once it gets better I forget about it and stop stretching so the problems comes back. It’s been this crazy cycle that has been going on for about the past four years. You would think that after dealing with this for so long now I would just keep up a stretching program and avoid the problem all together. Maybe I will try that this time…but I wouldn’t count on it.

I did a 3 mile run at lunch today and my hip was killing me, so back to stretching. On the plus side it is a BEAUTIFUL day here. It is in the mid 70′s and not a cloud in the sky. I couldn’t pass up a day like this because of a little hip pain!
