What goes through YOUR mind at 3am?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Yep, its 3:10am and  I could do Calculus I am so awake.  Is it the Pepsi at 3pm or monkey mind? Perhaps that is a poll question??!?! I would ask Paul to set it up, but he is deep in sleep. Jake is sleeping in Tyler’s bed b/c Tyler has been in Anna’s top bunk for months now. When I poked my head in, Jake looked at me with eyes that were BEGGING not to be sent back to the couch–or God forbid…THE FLOOR! I let him be.

I finished an awesome book tonight (at 9pm, not just now). Time Travelers Wife. Holy CRAP! I BAWLED through the last 20 pages. Paul was chuckling at me. It was what Oprah refers to as the “ugly cry.” My nose was so stuffed up that Paul made a special effort to fall asleep before me so he could not hear me sawing logs. I take after my daddy-o on that one (sorry, Dad–you know its true! Elli does too, but I am not sure she admits it).

3:15am…#1 way to stop eating peanut butter out of the jar: Let Barton lick the spoon. I woke up with my stomach growling (add that to the poll) so my quick snack is a spoonful of PB. Which became 2 tonight. Luckily Barton is in the kitchen chair next to me (with his sleepy eyes wondering where his sleepaholic mom went to and when is she coming back) so he saved me. Bob K.–I know you will especially like this part. Bridge, I think you should send it to him at work today to make sure he sees it. Although perhaps our family website is his homepage at the DOD??

3:17am…speaking of Bridgette–she sent me one of my fav pics of myself so I will share it w you too. I had gone to surf camp that spring so I tried my hand at it that summer. Yeah, I need more practice.

OK, Barton is purring his siren song so I am going to give this sleep thing another shot. The alarm goes off in 1 hour and 29 minutes. Tick tick tick tick…

Susan’s Birthday Dinner 2009

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Susan is having a hard time deciding what she wants to do for her birthday dinner and wanted me to make a poll. She is trying to decide between a growler from Red Oak and Doritos or 1618 West Seafood Grill. If she lets me add some more food in addition to the Doritos I am happy either way, otherwise my vote is for 1618.  If you have another suggestion feel free to add it in the comments.

What should we have for Susan's birthday dinner

  • Growler and Doritos (63%, 5 Votes)
  • 1618 (38%, 3 Votes)
  • Other (add suggestion in the comments) (-1%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 8

Birthday WEEK is here!!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

The moment you have all been waiting for…Birthday Week 2009!! Some of you know…I am struggling with turning 35. I am aging up into another checkbox demographic, when you round up I am now 40. My mom and dad still seem the same age–parent age. But they have an almost 40 year old…OMG–that’s ME!!!! But I am also parent age b/c I am a parent. When did this happen? I don’t even have my braces off yet, do I? Aren’t I still that geek in the suspenders?

You know some of the fun that has been had already. This week the fun ratchets up a notch!

Thursday: Paul bought tickets to the taping of NPR’s “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” in NC. I am a HUGE fan. Being a contestant on this news quiz show is on my bucket list. Paul downloads the radio show for my iPod and let me tell you–it has gotten me through MANY  miles of running. Oh, and we are going to dinner before that. Not sure where. Oh, and we are leaving work early. :)

Friday: Since this is such a big b-day for me (see above), I want to do a significant physical event. I used to do bike a mile, a situp and a push up for each year of my life. But then I did an Ironman Triathlon and a 35 mile bike ride does not seem such a big deal. So this year is the Triple Hump of Death Birthday Victory Bike Ride: The ride that will spank me 35 times…and one to grow on. (all trademarks apply to that name) We will be riding on Friday. It will only be 95 degrees, bummer. Then we have our first Team in Training bike-run workout. Then Paul is going to Bryan’s house to play guitar so I can hang out at home by myself (this is a wonderful thing!).

Saturday, The Day: If Elli cooperates, I become an Auntie!!!! But, being the older sister, she will probably deny me my only wish in life. :) I plan to SLEEP IN. Then Tyler has his last Tball game. We are a little unsure of events on The Day. Option 1: stay home and finish some house projects (put cages on the ‘mater plants, paint the trim, touch up some walls), and for My Meal we talked about a growler of Red Oak beer and a bag of Doritos. Option 2: Training swim in the lake and 1618 for a fancy dinner. We will see.

Sunday. etc.: Not sure, but on June 26 My Sister’s Keeper (the movie) comes out. I am hoping to talk some of my girlfriends into going w me to cry through, I mean see, it.

Birthday month fun and other randomness!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

My name is Susan, I am about to be 35 and I still celebrate my birthday for a whole month! Week 1—shopped a little bit. Week 2–going to Cold Stone Creamery for a treat. Week 3–not sure yet beyond that. I am hoping for a niece for my actual birthday. We will see if younger siblings really always do get what they want!!!

I uploaded some photos of family randomness.

Goals–yes, I have quit setting them, but I did already set the goal to mountain bike this year. CHECK!!! We went last night and tonight and will go tomorrow night. I cried twice last night and wiped out pretty bad (scraped and bruised leg to prove it!). Tonight was MUCH better! Paul just decided to take me to the toughest trail in Greensboro for my first time last night.

Work had been difficult at best. I had a wonderful review and received the maximum raise. Although raises are frozen for management (which includes me). I had to eliminate a position and I had that meeting w the person and the staff today. I cried again. Paul made me cheese grits though and it helped.

K, that’s about it. We are up WAY past our bedtime! G’night!

More new foods

March 31, 2009

Sauerkraut. Pickled cabbage. No matter what word you choose, language you use, or how many times you say it, it translates the same–GROSS!!!! I am writing this on April 27 and it is still in the fridge and Paul says it is still good. Ironically, I also found out today Olestra, the super food substitute from the mid-1990′s that caused anal leakage, is back on the market. This time as an industrial lubricant. Charming. Almost as charming as the picture of me trying sauerkraut. Notice the look on the kids’ faces.

New foods…Easter edition!

Week of April 6

I thought I got off easy when Paul and I went to Food Lion Wednesday night and he got Cheese Waffies (Googols–its like the southern version of cheesy poofs, but in a bag). I tried one and did not really care for it. Then, came yesterday–the day before Easter.

I ate rabbit. I originally thought it was THE rabbit, the Easter one. It must have been Roger Rabbit instead because the kids had their baskets full of candy and toys this morning. Back to the rabbit though. It seriously did taste like chicken. Like a chicken thigh. I am partial to white meat though so the thigh is edible (especially when I am setting an example for the kids!), but much more than that. Then I started thinking about the rabbit-ness of it. My belly had been rolling most of the day as it was, but the rabbit really put me over the edge. I actually ended up leaving the table. But not before Tyler said thoughtfully as he gnawed on the rabbit leg, “Whoa! I can taste the rabbit poop!”

Happy Easter!

New food I tried this week (not an April fool’s joke)

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

As you probably know from reading here or b/c you have dined w me, my eating habits are odd and limited to say the least. I have been shooting to eat a new something each week. This has included anything from Frosted Flakes to okra. I thought you would get a kick out of hearing what some of these are.

DISCLAIMER: if I post something that you know I have tried, sorry. It is not intentional, but you know my memory is as limited as my food choices.

Week of March 29th: Baked Lays Sour Cream and Cheddar Chips. We were rushing last night to get to Anna’s game. We had a hill repeat run workout last night and you know we are slow so we ran outta time and hit Subway for dinner where I picked up this most delicious treat! I highly recommend them! Sour cream and cheddar–how can you go wrong?

Week of March 22th: chocolate covered raisins. One of my co-workers had them and offered me one. They were ok. I think the kind of chocolate they are covered w would probably make a difference. Later that week someone else had some in a meeting so I tried that brand. These were much bigger. They tasted ok, couldn’t really taste the chocolate so much. And I cannot imagine raisins occur that big in nature.

Hey! Check me out!

Couple cool things from work today. A few weeks ago one of my departments won an award: American Diabetes Association Provider of the Year. There was an awards gala at Washington Duke Inn. Check me out in the pic below. I got this from the ADA today. I was waiting to get a picture of one of my nurses who won the ADA Patient Care Award. It was a great night!

Then I got an email w the proof of an article I did. I can’t show the whole thing here b/c they are sending it out to all of their customers: INTERNATIONALLY! How cool is THAT?! Here is a piece (the blue on the bottom and right is the actual article I wrote):

Susan’s bucket list

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I made a new page tonight (Monday), but Paul won’t make it go live until tomorrow so that you, our audience, will keep being entertained on a daily basis. I think that if that is the case, you should probably go rent a movie. Our life can’t be that fun, can it? :)

Anyhow—see the tab to the right or click here to read my list. PS. I have not been diagnosed w a terminal illness.

Susan's first day of middle school

I’m sitting here with Susan right now as she goes through her old school stuff and I have learned some interesting things. First, she likes to make fun of the North Carolina education system but I have just learned that she won a science fair after coming to a incorrect conclusion in her project. There are pictures from band camp, spelling bee awards, a participation certificate for a calculator tournament…the list just keeps going.

There was also the C+ she got in advanced chemistry, “her only C”. Although there was the year where she had not one but two P.E. classes. One of these P.E. classes was “officiating” where she became a licensed referee. As a high school basketball player I am sure this was very difficult for her.

By the way: This picture was from Susan’s first day of middle school where it was “VERY” important to pick a good outfit.
